Camp Boggy Creek’s mission is to foster a spirit of joy by creating a free, safe and medically-sound camp environment that enriches the lives of children with serious illnesses and their families. Opened in 1996, the Camp is the only free year-round, therapeutic medical camp for children diagnosed in one of 15 different illness groups (e.g., cancer, epilepsy, heart disease, sickle cell and others). Co-founded by actor/philanthropist Paul Newman and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, along with other business and community leaders throughout Florida, the Camp offers summer sessions from June through August and family retreats between September and April.
During the first year, Camp Boggy Creek welcomed 675 children for summer programs and 94 families for retreats. By comparison in 2015, the Camp welcomed more than 1,100 summer campers and 550 families for one of the medically supervised three- to six-day therapeutic camp programs. More than 65,000 children and family members in 15 different illness groups have experienced life-changing camp programs.
Camp Boggy Creek’s Medical Specialty Camp Program offers children ages 7-16 with life-threatening or chronic conditions the opportunity to participate in an authentic recreational camp program, all while receiving the highest quality of medical care free of charge. Our intentional programming offers children the opportunity to explore their hidden talents in a safe environment that offers positive reinforcement. Programs are all "challenge by choice," meaning Camp Boggy Creek champions the courage of all campers who try new things, whether riding a horse, performing at Stage Night in silly costumes, or climbing a 42 foot tower and cruising down the zip line. All recreational programs and facilities are universally accessible to campers and include: Aquatics, Equestrian, Fishing, Music & Performing Arts, Nature & Discovery, Archery, Arts & Crafts, Boating, Rock Climbing Wall, Ropes Courses, Team Building Initiatives, and Woodshop.
Because an individual’s sense of self is built through experience and feedback, Camp Boggy Creek’s programs provide carefully designed opportunities for campers to meet all challenges with success in a safe, fun and supportive environment. When a camper feels empowered, safe and is enjoying themselves, they are more eager and open to participate and try something new. This in turn leads to benefits of the program that include enhanced self-esteem, confidence, self-image, tolerance, respect, independence, understanding and socialization. Camp Boggy Creek’s Intentional Programs play a significant role for campers to realize their hopes and dreams and to have normalcy in their lives.
In 2017, Camp Boggy Creek will celebrate its 21st Anniversary. We are honored and look forward to sharing the Joy of Yes throughout the year with our highly valued partner and dedicated friend, International Motor Sports Association (IMSA).
